Privacy notice

This is a set of static pages. There is no account to create, no comment box, no newsletter, no shop and no login, so most of what a privacy notice normally has to explain does not arise here.

What the server records

Every web server keeps a log of the requests it answers, and this one is no exception. A log line typically records the IP address the request came from, the date and time, the page or file requested, the HTTP status returned, the size of the response, the browser's user-agent string, and the referring page if the browser sent one.

Those logs exist to keep the site working: to see whether pages are returning errors, to find out why something is slow, and to identify automated traffic that is hammering the server. They are not used to build a profile of anybody, they are not combined with any other source of information, and they are not passed to advertisers or data brokers. They are kept for a short period and then discarded in the ordinary course of server maintenance.

The hosting infrastructure that serves these pages necessarily processes the same request data in order to deliver them, in the way that any host does.

What is not here

There is no analytics package on this site. No page view is measured, no session is stitched together, and no heatmap or session recording runs. There is no advertising of any kind, and no advertising network is given a hook into these pages.

There are no third-party trackers. No social network buttons, no embedded video players, no comment platform, no tag manager, no consent-management vendor, no chat widget. Nothing on a page reaches out to another company's server while you read it.

Fonts are self-hosted, which matters more than it sounds. A site that pulls its typefaces from a font content delivery network hands that network a request from every reader, complete with IP address, on every page. The typefaces used here are served from the same place as the pages, so no such request is made.

Images, stylesheets and the small amount of script on the site are served the same way, from this domain only.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies of its own, and there is nothing to consent to as a result. The detail, including what a browser may store for its own purposes regardless of what a site does, is set out separately in the cookie notice.

Email

Writing to the address given on the contact page is the only way to hand over personal information here, and doing so is entirely voluntary. An email carries whatever the sender chooses to put in it: a name, a return address, sometimes a signature block with more than the sender intended.

Correspondence is read, kept while it is relevant to the correction or question it concerns, and then deleted. It is not added to any mailing list, because there is no mailing list. It is not shared with anyone else, and it is not used to contact the sender about anything other than the matter they raised. Mail sent to that address passes through an email provider on its way, as all email does.

Rights over information held about you

Anyone may ask what information relating to them is held here, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. In practice the answer to the first question is usually that nothing is held beyond a server log entry that cannot be tied to a person, or an email thread the person themselves started. Requests go to the address on the contact page.

Requests to remove published material that is accurate and sourced are a separate matter from requests about personal data, and are handled as described on the contact page.

Changes to this notice

If the way this site works changes, this notice changes with it. There is no version history published, and no notification is sent, because there is no one subscribed to send it to.
